With the new technology, there will be a lot of questions in breeder’s minds. I see this genomic issue as similar to the time that A.I first started.
Many thought that because egg yolk was used as an extender for the semen that you could get a chicken born rather than a calf!!!

Because I asked a lot of questions about Genomic testing in my previous blog, I thought I might find an article to answer some of those questions and concerns.

Genomic testing

Is Genomic Testing of dairy cattle sending the industry down the right path?
There is a lot of controversy out there!!
Is it going to narrow the genetic base even more than it is? I would say yes. The breeds have been narrowed a lot in the past 30-40 years as the genetic pool became a world wide market.
Now the genomic testing will narrow the cow side of the genetic base more than the bulls ever were.

The value of a lot of great cow lines will drop to a value of grade/commercial cows. A few cow lines will have even greater value to the A.I. companies but will they be willing to pay double the price for the young sires they purchase or lease?

Should the dairymen hold out on selling/leasing the young sire from these superior genomic tested cows or cow families until they are able to get the premium purchase price or lease?

This all starts to happen in the January 2009 sire summary.

Is it time for the old effort of the “Breeders Majority” type movement to return?

Who should run the demands of the genetics of the world? Dairymen or the Major Bull Studs?

It is a time to think and make a stand!!!

Who will be the greatest son of Braedale Goldwyn?

Is it MD-Valleyvue Goldwyn Chris-ET-RC?

MD-Valleyvue Goldwyn Chris-Et RC was breed by Calvin Schrock and is now leased to Select Sires.

MD-Valleyvue Goldwyn Chris was syndicated and sampled. He has a clean health chart and is housed at JLG in California.

MD-Valleyvue Goldwyn Chris is from the linage of the Queen of the Breed, the great Roxy.

He was genomic tested and was higher than parent average.

MD-Valleyvue Goldwyn Chris will be re-released by select Sires as a super sampler.

A lot of MD-Valleyvue Goldwyn Chris semen was used in Pennsylvania , Idaho, and California.

Braedale Goldwyn Makes Holstein History and Dies

Braedale Goldwyn is the first bull in Holstein history to be the Premier Sire of the show at World Dairy Expo (2008) and be ranked in the top 10 TPI.

Then he dies. What a subtle way to end a great career.

Congratulations to Braedale Goldwyn and all who have bred, developed, and used this great sire.

Poor Flush results with Braedale Goldwyn

This week 2 cows were flushed to Braedale Goldwyn. One was to fill an embryo order to Europe.
That flush had 18 un-fertilzed eggs. The donor cows was Windy-Knoll-View Posey. She is an Ex Integrity daughter of Windy-Knoll-View Pala.

Another flush to Braedale Goldwyn had 3 of 15 eggs fertilized.

Does Braedale Goldwyn have a clone at Semex?

There is talk in the dairy circles that Braedale Goldwyn has a clone and that semen from the clone will be availible. Can anyone verify this?

Braedale Goldwyn is the 1st Holstein Sire ever to be ranked in the Top 10 TPI and win the Premier Sire of the Show at World Dairy Expo.

Braedale Goldwyn recieved this recognition in October 2008 and dies in November 2008.

Semen is limited on Braedale Goldwyn and the Semex suggested retail is now at $350 per dose in the US.

Picston Shottle 8/2008

Picston Shottle had another big increase for this “once in a decade” bull. There are very few people that will say anything negative about the Shottle daughters. The biggest question is if the computer has it accounted for, that he got used on the better cows because he was so expensive an allocated. Therefore the daughters are in the herds that may be taking better care that average of the daughters. In my mind this would affect the actual score and actual productionlevel of the daughters, but probably not the PTA’s. If the Shottle daughters are in the better herds, they are probably competing against the Goldwyns, Stormatics, Outsides and daughters of the other higher priced and better bulls. Anyway, Shottle added almost 4000 new daughters and now has7901 in 2592 herds. 11% are in the US. He has 3751 classified that of those classified in the US average 82.9-85.9 age adjusted. The linear does not indicate any weakneww in any trait and I don’t know anywhere to tell you to protect him. D.P.R. has gone down as well as P.L. but I suspect thathas more to do with a very high % of the Shottles getting flushed and not bred back compared to there contemporaries. Mtoto has been the best bull of the breed for Somatic Cell Score and Shottle is the only Mtoto son in th etop 50. With the price that he is and will be for some time to come, I highly recomend picking out several of the best Shottle sons and getting the Shottle blood in your herd that way. Richard Mellinger

A Pala Born at Double Tree

Windy-Knoll-View Ultimate Pala has a new Great Grand daughter At Double Tree Holsteins.
The Calf is the results of embryos purchased from Adrienne Schoenbachler. The calf is an Affirmed out of Iowa-Hills Gibson Prize EX-90. The 2nd dam is Windy-Knoll-View Winny-ET,
VG-88, Ex MS by Comestar Leader. The 3rd Dam is the great Windy-Knoll-View Ultimate Pala EX-94 DOM. Pala has 54 Excellent and VG Daughters to date. This calf has a full sister that showed very well in the Northwest this year as a March Calf. This is not a big surprize from Gibson Prize. Look at the cows in the pedigree. The big names are; Windy-Knoll-View Ultimate Pala EX-94, Shoremar s Alicia-Et EX-97, Comestar Lauri Sheik. There are more pregnancies due soon. We will keep you posted with more news.
