Red and White Holsteins have a recessive gene for hair color. The traditional color for holsteins is black and white. In order to get a Red and White Holstein calf, a red hair color gene must be given by both the sire and the dam. 75% of the world’s dairy cows are Red and White in color, although they are not all purbreed holsteins. Red and White Holsteins are gaining popularity in the United States where about 90% of the dairy cattle are Holsteins. Recently, there have been several popular sires that the Regisered Holstein Breeders have used that are Red and White Holsteins or Red Carrier Sires.

Some of those most popular bulls that are Red and White Holsteins or Red Carriers are Ja-Bob Jordan-Red, Kinglea Leader RC, Markwell Kite RC, Pursuit September Storm RC, Brookknook Milestone Red, STBVQ Rubens RC, Ladino Park Talent RC, Indiahead Red Marker RC, KHW Kite Advent Red, and Renown Factor RC.Â

 The Red and White Holsteins will have a huge growth in numbers over the next few years in the US and in the World.

Braedale Goldwyn added 57 dtrs and has a total of 309 on the production proof with 178 classified. Braedale Goldwyn will ad a bunch of dtrs. through out 2008 summaries. Braedale Goldwyn is price at $130 and is very hard to find any semen. Picston Shottle is #1 TPI bull. He added almost 800 dtrs. 17% of the total dtrs. or 175 are in the US. His US dtrs. average 82.4 actual on classifacation and age adjust to 85.8—Wow— The bad news is that he is housed in Great Britian and with the Foot and Mouth issue there, Semen will not come to the US for some time. Look for a really good Picton Shottle son.

The Utah holstein convention was last week. Most conversations were about federal milk order and BST. While I was  in Ogden I went to Pappys farm, nobody was home. However; I did see the Dundee dau of Betsy she is a really nice young cow probably as good as any I have seen. We have recently had some Champion daus calf with nice udders, the first several that calved was pretty plain uddered, but milked well.     Â

He is a great young bull with a great future. He has several maternal brothers in A.I. check out this great cow family. One of his maternal brothers is Windy-Knoll-View Pronto at Select Sires.

January 15, 2008 will be the day for the new sire summaries. Who will be hot and who will not. Will Windy-Knoll -View Pronto climb higher on the TPI list as he adds daughters? What will happen to the bulls getting the 2nd crop early daughters? Will Goldwyn and Shottel get better or will they crash? There are a lot of genetic programs that have invested thousands of dollars into their programs with these bulls. Breeders have lots of heifers pregnant and calving to these two bulls and the studs have sampled a lot of sons with hundreds of thousands of units distributed. Tommorrow is the day for excitement or tears.

Escalating feed cost, particularly a soybean price above $10, kept the December milk-feed price ratio below 3.0. At 2.82 for December, the ratio is 0.24 points less than November and just 0.39 points higher than a year ago. The all-milk price fell 20 cents, but is still $21.70 per hundredweight.

Recent classifacation results in Canada and the US are very interesting for Braedale Goldwyn. In Canada of the first 7 daughters that would be old enough to go Excellent, 5 did go Excellent.

In the US, one classifier has scored 7 just fresh 2yr. olds . 6 of the 7 went VG and all 7 where scored VG or better in the udder.
